Begin with variety
Sri Lankan cooking draws on rice, spices, vegetables and fruit. Ask what is freshly prepared and try a selection of dishes in modest portions, rather than looking for one definitive meal.
Ask about breakfast
Hoppers, string hoppers and coconut-based accompaniments offer a different start to the day. Availability varies by stay and kitchen, so ask what can be prepared locally.
Share your preferences
Tell us about dietary needs before travel. Explain allergies directly to each food provider and ask about ingredients and preparation; a dish’s name alone is not enough to establish suitability.
A few dishes to ask about
Ask your host what the kitchen prepares locally and which dishes work well together. There is no need to order everything at once. Breakfast, a simple lunch and a relaxed evening meal can each introduce different flavours. The suggestions below are for discovering the food, rather than a statement about a dish’s suitability for a dietary requirement.
| Dish | What to ask for |
|---|---|
| Rice and curry | A selection of vegetable and other curries with rice; ask what is in each dish and accompaniment. |
| Hoppers | Bowl-shaped pancakes, with plain or egg versions depending on the kitchen. |
| String hoppers | Fine steamed noodle nests, usually offered with accompaniments. |
| Kottu | Chopped roti cooked with a chosen mix of ingredients; ask about the preparation and spice level. |
Questions for planning your trip
How do I ask for milder food?
Discuss the heat before the dish is prepared and ask for chilli-based accompaniments separately where possible. “Mild” can mean different things to different cooks, so begin with a small amount and explain your preference clearly.
Can vegetarian preferences be included?
Add your preferences to the enquiry and discuss the proposed meals. Ask about stocks, fish or meat ingredients, accompaniments and preparation rather than relying on a dish name. For allergies, check directly with each provider; this guide cannot establish that a meal is suitable.
How can food fit into a driving day?
Tell the team whether you prefer a leisurely lunch or a shorter stop. Leave a realistic meal break between visits, especially if you want food prepared to particular requirements. Confirm any cooking demonstration or hosted meal separately in your quotation.
